Hotel Bad Murtensee, with its long tradition and deep roots in local history, is delighted to invite you to our 3rd Cultural Apéro. Our aim is to bring the local population and our visitors closer to the cultural and historical wealth of our region, which never ceases to fascinate us.
Speaker: Stefan Matter grew up with solemnity as a living festive tradition. As a curator, he looks after the historical collections of the University Library of Bern. As a medievalist, he studies medieval textual cultures and is interested in the role of narratives in the image we have of our society today. So it was only natural that he should take an interest in the history of the commemoration of the Battle of Murten.
Theme: ‘Keep still, Helvetius. A walk through the prehistory of the Morat solemnity’.
The collective commemoration of this European event began immediately after the Battle of Murten in 1476. The Day of the 10,000 Knights, which already played a special role in the Swiss war calendar, was from then on celebrated in Murten and other federal towns as a day of commemoration. Over time, remembrance gradually moved away from commemorating the dead to becoming a local school festival, via political affirmation. The presentation highlights the key stages in this development.
